Coming off a historic multiple-cup winning season, the Montreal Irish co-hosted the 2nd annual Prom Dress Rugby game on their home grounds at St. Julie on October 16th. The event is jointly run by the Montreal Barbarians and featured a great day of touch in tulle.
The co-ed game featured players from the Irish, Barbs and Locks who showed up in their best prom attire. The action started just after 3pm with each team performing a Haka before kickoff and it looked like team “glitter” was going to open the scoring early on with a break that exploited a 2 man overlap, but the ref dealt them a harsh blow with a penalty call for “sprinting in floral” allowing the opposition to regain possession. The ref did add points for scoring with flare and Montreal Irish flyhalf Kate Parkinson scored a stunner sliding through a massive puddle in the try zone. As the last seconds ticked away in regulation time the score was evened out at 3 tries apiece when team “glitter” added 3 bonus points to their try by performing a back flip in a pink paisley cocktail dress.
Team “no name” took the title in sudden death overtime on a multiple phase play as the muddy field hampered both the integrity of some fetching satin bridesmaid dresses and everyone’s ball handling skills. The post-game festivities included beer and BBQ run graciously by VP grounds Sheena and official superfan and “not just a pretty face” award winner, Gareth. The players then voted for best dressed, best try, ball hog and of course, prom king and queen with each winner “shooting the stiletto.” The crew moved downtown to Hurleys to continue celebrations and catch some hockey fully decked out in their tiaras.
Big thank you to Angela for organizing, Maureen for reffing, Sheena and Gareth for running the clubhouse, Chrissie for official photography and of course all the players that made the event the great day it was.
