On Saturday 1 October, St Julie hosted the first John Jones Montreal Sevens. Despite the weather, everyone had a great day and some exciting rugby was displayed. 15 teams competed in the Men’s tournament including the Belgian National sevens side, the Belgian Barbarians, who were the eventual winners of the cup, beating Brome Lake Ducks in the final. Meanwhile, 9 teams competed for the Women’s tournament which was won by Ormstown who beat Lady Locks. The Men’s Plate was won by Brock who beat Montreal Barbs while the Women’s Plate was won by St Anne’s Vets who beat Laval Nomades. In true rugby fashion, the winner of the Men’s Bowl was decided by a boat race in which Montreal Exiles defeated Laval Nomades 4 beers to 3!
Thanks to all the teams that entered and all involved in the organisation of such an enjoyable event. Next year’s tournament promises even more excitement and hopefully some better weather!
