(OLD MAN of the MOUNTAIN RUGBY TOURNAMENT)
June 2-4, 2011
As most of you know, two very fine gentlemen passed away in the last two years. Billy Campbell and John Jones were not only very keen rugby players and instrumental in keeping the Old Boys movement going for 30 years, from the early 80’s to the present day, but they also had a passion for all outdoor activities and especially hiking, trekking and climbing. For many years they, together with their buddies, would make an annual trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and climb one of the peaks in the Presidential Range, most often Mt. Washington. In addition, they were permanent fixtures at the Old Man of the Mountain Rugby Tournament during its’ first 15 years or so, bringing a team every June to Franconia Notch.
In honour of these two noble men it is proposed to conduct a climb/trek on Mount Washington on Friday, June 3rd. As part of the climb, we will place a plaque somewhere on the mountain in their memory. Furthermore, we hope to enter a team in the OMOM tournament either from Montreal or combined with Ottawa, Peterborough or Toronto.
The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, June 2
Travel to Gorham, New Hampshire (about 2 1/2 hours from Montreal). Check in at the Royalty Inn (1-800-437-3529). Ask for the special “Campbell/Jones climb” group room rate of $59 plus tax. The hotel has a pool and all rooms have twin double beds.
Friday, June 3
Early start, we will take the Tuckermans Ravine trail (about a 15 min. drive from Gorham). Do not be put off by the word “assault”. The climb is strenuous, but no climbing skills are required unless you go the Tuckermans Wall route. We will not, we will take the Lion Head route. Also many of us will probably not want to climb all the way. This is fine, there are some great views from the half way point and the plaque laying will probably take place well below the peak. By the way, ladies are most welcome and we hope Marilyn and Danielle will both join us for the climb. We should be up and down by 3 or 4 in the afternoon.
Celebration dinner will be held at 6p.m. in Gorham.
Saturday, June 4
Travel to Franconia Notch (about 35 miles from Gorham) for a day of Old Boys rugby at the OMIM tournament. You can join the evening festivities and stay the night or head home.
If you plan on participating in the climb please contact John Dennett at 514-626-7346 or 514-426-3961 or firstname.lastname@example.org
