On Saturday 29th September the second annual John Jones Montreal 7s Tournament took place at St Julie. Proceeds from the tournament go towards the John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides bursaries for up and coming rugby players pursuing post secondary education.
In total, 24 teams met on a cold but reasonably dry Saturday morning. 8 women’s teams competed in pools of four, culminating in a plate and cup playoff. Co-hosts St Lambert Locks beatBeaconsfield17-0 in the plate final. The cup final was hotly contested between Chicks with Balls (SABRFC) and Ormstown Saracens who were eventual winners 17-7.
Meanwhile, 16 men’s teams battled it out in pools of four, leading to a knock out stage consisting of bowl, plate and cup competitions. St Lambert Locks men also reached their final in the bowl competition but were runners up to Brome losing 5-12. After a tough qualifying round, Ormstown men reached the plate final were they convincingly defeated touring side Lanark II by 29-12. The Belgium Barbarians were back defending their cup title in the final after narrow victories against Ormstown in qualification and then MIRFC in the semi final. Their opponents, St Annes, lead for most of the game but the Barbarians clinched a late score to retain the cup for another year and remain unbeaten on Canadian soil.
After the awards ceremony, everyone headed to the after tournament party at Hurley’s in downtown Montreal. For the hardcore that made it, there was a brunch at McLean’s Pub the following day.
Thanks to everyone who took part, the sponsors and the organizers. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2013 for another exciting tournament.
